Case 2

HISTORY:

74 year old lady. History of diverticular disease and ulcerative colitis. Abscess collection in pelvis/lower abdomen. At laprotomy, diverticular disease identified. In addition, surgeons described a “curious area of somewhat nodular tissue” adherent to the lower bowel wall suggestive of possible malignant pathology. Large bowel resection.

Gross findings: A segment of large bowel measuring 170mm in length. There is fibrous induration of the large bowel wall which extends into the pericolic fat. On opening of the bowel, there are multiple diverticulae extending into the pericolic fat with complicated disease. In the region described as a curious area, there are additional stretched visceral structures embedded within per-colic fibrous tissue.
